Umbrella Glossary Translucent White, Transparent and White Diffuser Standard translucent white umbrellas can be used either strobed-through or with light bounced from their surface to reduce shadows and produce an even, soft, low-contrast light over a large area. Most translucent materials allow approximately 50% light transmission. White and White Reflector Generally used as an excellent soft bounce light source perfect to light large groups or rooms. Some white umbrellas have a removable backing fabric and can be used as a diffusion light source. Metallized Silver Metallized umbrellas generally produce -stop more light than Silver/Gold or Zebras with a narrower area of coverage, which means increased contrast that can improve color saturation and detail in your subject matter. Some surfaces are textured in finish and are more efficient in their light output. Super Silver Similar to the Metallized Silver, but the Super Silver produce twice as much light output.
